Douglas W. Culham (1886 - 1988) – Canadian WW1 artist

With thanks to Paul Henderson for finding this artist for us

Douglas William Culham was born on 10th January 1888 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Joseph Alexander Culham and his wife Helen, nee Wilcocks Copp.

During the First World War Douglas served in the land forces of the Canadian Expeditionary Force as part of the 3rd Canadian Divisional Ammunition Column.

His unit was tasked with the highly dangerous job of using horses to transport ammunition nightly to the 18-pounder artillery batteries during the horrific  Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium between October and November 1917. The firsthand chaos, smoke, mud, and destruction he witnessed during the offensive heavily influenced his work.

According to my research, Douglas died in 1988.  If anyone has any definite information please get in touch.
